(I know what you’re doing)

Chances are, this teacher actually knows that the student is texting.  But let’s not ‘pretend’ that it’s not happening, and figure out a way to make cell phones acceptable to use in school.

Therefore I propose the following policy for Electronic Devices* for my classes:

  1. Electronic devices should enhance learning, but will not be allowed to disrupt it.
  2. If used, electronic devices must be left on your desk, running silent.
  3. You must obtain permission before recording (photos, video, audio, etc).
  4. Use of electronic devices must conform to the policies in the Appleton West handbook.
  5. Use of your own electronic devices will be used at your own risk; AASD is not responsible for damage to or theft of your property.

*Electronic devices include (but are not limited to): cell phones, laptops, graphing calculators, iPods, handheld games, etc.

Keep in mind that this is just an experiment – an experiment that I can end at any time.  Also, this is a policy ONLY for my classes, and is only effect when I am present.

I believe that we must learn to use electronic devices appropriately in our society.  There is a time and a place to text, and it is important for you to recognize when it is not appropriate.  There are too many ways that we can use these devices to enhance your learning (leave ideas in the comments), that it is absurd to ignore these powerful tools.
